Ticket fees, platinum and dynamic pricing: what you are actually seeing

Four different things are often described as “dynamic pricing”. They are not interchangeable, and the label matters less than the final product and price you are being asked to accept.

Face value

The price assigned to the ticket before mandatory booking, facility or delivery fees. It is useful for comparison, but it may not be the amount charged at checkout.

Price tiers

Several fixed prices can exist for the same area. When the cheapest allocation sells out, the next tier appears. The price changed for the buyer, but it was not necessarily recalculated in real time. Read the current ticket name and price rather than assuming the first advertised tier is still available.

Premium or platinum inventory

A primary seller may price selected seats above nearby standard inventory. Check what is included. A higher price does not by itself mean hospitality, merchandise or a better view. In September 2025 the CMA said Ticketmaster had committed to clearer UK information about ticket types and pricing following its Oasis investigation.

Dynamic pricing

The Competition and Markets Authority describes dynamic pricing as prices adjusted rapidly and frequently in response to demand conditions. Whatever system is used, pause at checkout: confirm the seat, included benefits and total rather than treating an earlier advertised figure as the current offer.

Mandatory fees and optional extras

For a real comparison, use the unavoidable total. Separate ticket insurance, parking, merchandise or charitable additions may be optional; booking or facility charges may not be. Remove preselected extras you do not want and capture the final order summary.

A five-second price checkIs this primary or resale? What exact seat or package is it? What is the unavoidable total for all tickets? If the answer breaches your budget, leave the basket.
